a guide to Champs Elysees

Champs Elysees

about Champs Elysees

No other area of Paris can lay claim to having as many notable attractions and landmarks as the area in and around the Champs Elysées. We suggest beginning at the bottom of the Avenue des Champs Elysées and working your way up.

Such an approach makes Place de la Concorde your starting point, and a fine one at that, with a towering Egyptian obelisk providing the centrepiece, flanked by two magnificent fountains. The official presidential residence at Palais de l'Elysée is not far from here, not accessible to the public but still an impressive and profoundly important building all the same. On the other side of the road, art lovers can enjoy the exhibits at the Galerie National and the Grand Palais.

Moving onto the main street, where big names brands compete to tempt you into an expensive purchase. You will not find anything cheap here, but even if you decide to keep your money in your pocket, you cannot fail to be taken in by a spot of window shopping. At the top of the road, the Arc de Triomphe looms overhead, with its ornate carvings and spectacular view a fitting recompense for your efforts in completing your walk.

Did You Know? Renting a space on the Champs Elysées can cost businesses a colossal £600,000 a year.

Whilst navigating the Champs Elysées is not recommended for the first time visitor, nevertheless, to get to Place de la Concorde exit the Périphérique at Junction 15 (Porte de la Muette) and take the first right off the slip road. From here, bear left onto Avenue Henri Martin, continuing along the main road towards the Palais de Chaillot. At the roundabout by the palace, take the second exit onto Avenue du Président Wilson. Bear right after the modern art museum and turn left just before the Pont de l’Alma onto Voie Georges Pompidou. Follow the road around until you see the Jardin des Tuileries up ahead.
