a guide to Gare du Nord

Gare du Nord

about Gare du Nord

Realistically, you are here because you have either just arrived or are just about to leave. The Gare du Nord is the station that caters for the Eurostar service from London, as well as Thalys trains to seven other northern European cities in Germany, Belgium, Poland, Austria and the Netherlands. In much the same way as London's St Pancras International caters for the south of England, the Gare du Nord also serves nearby French cities.

First constructed by Jacques Hittorff in 1865, the station has undergone many upgrades over the years due to the addition of other services. Since the introduction of the Eurostar in 1994, the Gare du Nord has been able to boast an impressive forty four platforms.

Still, if you suffer a train delay, happen to be waiting to pick somebody up or just would simply like to explore the area, then there are a few distractions to be had. The ancient, picturesque Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul is right next door to the station, and has a fascinating history. Alternatively, you can while away the time with a stroll down the large, varied shopping precincts in Passage Brady or Passage du Prado.

Our tip: Look out for the nine large statues in the station, which depict Paris and the eight other European cities served by the Gare du Nord.
