Pavillon Porte De Versailles

37, rue du Hameau , Paris, 75015
"This hotel often gets mediocre reviews, but from my experience this was a great last-minute find in Paris. My better half and I planned a short trip to the City of Lights during what turned out to be a very busy convention month. The only rooms remaining in the city were those going for 350EUR a night or they were in lesser desired parts of town. We were travelling on a budget, and we didn't want to stay in a bad part of town, so the pressure to find a decent place in a decent part of town for a decent price was high. Then, miraculously, two days before our flight, I found the Pavillon Porte de Versailles.
It's in the 15eme arrondissement less than a block from the convention center, on the far south west end of the city. The neighborhood is safe, even at night, with Metro and tramway stops about a 2 minute walk from the hotel. And if the RER isn't shut down due to labor strikes, finding a cab at the nearby taxi stand is a breeze. And despite the fact it's a bit out of the way, it's easy and quick getting wherever you want to go in the city (or even taking a trip to Versailles.) A taxi from the hotel to CDG airport was less than 60EUR in fair traffic. There are a few restaurants up the street from the hotel, but really not a lot going on in this area.
The hotel is simple but nice. The staff speaks at least a little English, and were all helpful. Paris gets an unwarrented reputation of being filled with rude American haters, but truth is they're just very direct and matter-of-fact, but friendly and respectful, so if you show respect you'll receive it in return.
We got to the hotel a couple hours before posted check-in but they let us to our room right away (and didn't charge for an early check-in.) The elevator is very small. Three average-sized people max, without luggage. The room keys are electronic, and are also used to power the lights in the room. The rooms are small but comfortable and CLEAN. If you're planning to use them only for sleeping while spending your day out and about, it should be perfect. The walls are thin as is true in most 2-3 star hotels in Paris, but we didn't have a problem with rowdy neighbors. The rooms also have a very small closet and a safe for your valuables.
In the bathroom, we had hot water almost instantly, and the wall heaters in the room and bathroom both worked great. We had a courtyard view, which really looks at nothing but the apartments across the way, but if you find Paris to be a romantic city you'll appreciate the feeling of privacy and coziness the courtyeard view brings. But if you want a street view, I hear those are nice too. And the windows all have juliet balconies.
The televisions are small and simple, with only one English speaking channel (BBC News), some Italian and Spanish speaking programs and, of course, French channels. You can also listen to the radio on the television, which we did most of the time we had the t.v. going. The pillows are really small but the beds were comfy. In fact, when we came back to the room at the end of our 2nd day, the matress had been replaced with a new firmer one without us even asking for it. Speaking of room service, even if you leave the "Do Not Disturb" sign up on your door when you leave, they'll still come in to your room and clean later that morning. Just be aware in case you were planning to leave your priceless jewelry or intimates lying about.
The mini bar isn't fully stocked, but they have a few things we took advantage of (like the bottled water.)
Everytime you leave the hotel, you leave the key with the front desk, then ask for your key when you return. It's better than trying to keep track of your key anyway. They have free wi-fi in the lobby and in the breakfast room downstairs, which worked fine for us as we only checked our emails as we were coming and going. The breakfasts were standard fare, with croissants, ham, simple cerials, yogurt, juice, tea, coffee, etc. We ate breakfast at a nearby restaurant the first morning but really preferred the hotel breakfast because it was simple and easy and you help yourself to whatever you want. The lady servicing the breakfast was very sweet and friendly.
We niether found nor heard of any bed bugs from anyone during our stay here.
Overall it was a wonderful stay. If you choose this hotel on your next trip to Paris, we hope you have the same experience."
